L1 Scientific was founded by a visually-impaired entrepreneur in response to Innovative Solutions Canada’s Alternate Format Business Technology Challenge https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/innovative-solutions-canada/en/alternate-format-business-technology-challenge.  The company came into operations in 2021 with the aim of making information more accessible through conversational dialogue using smart-speakers.

Smart-speakers, such as the Amazon Echo, are the perfect medium to deliver content to the print-disabled community.  Whether a person is dealing with dyslexia, visual-impairment, or limited mobility, a conversational interface to narrated content is a powerful solution.

Since launching in 2021, the company successfully completed Phase 1 of its contract with the Canadian government, and is now in Phase 2.  In spring of 2023, we released the Black Press News Reader, an Amazon voice-app that allows listeners to gain access to all of Black Press’s digital content in a screen-free and hands-free environment.  We are excited to build off this success and will be bringing several more voice-apps to market in the months to come.
